University of Belize and San Pedro Junior College Signs Memorandum of Understanding to meet the needs of Belize’s development & tourism sector

Recognizing the common interest in the continuous development of the human resources within the tourism sector, President of the University of Belize, Dr. Cary Fraser and Ms. Martha Guerrero, Chairperson of San Pedro Junior College (SPJC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the delivery of UB’s Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management on Friday 17 January, in San Pedro Town.

UB in its pursuit to make higher education accessible to the Belize populace will offer the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management at the San Pedro Junior College Campus in San Pedro Town; monitor the delivery of the program and will award certification for the program; provide the necessary qualified personnel to deliver the program; and be responsible for all applications, registration, and graduation activities.

San Pedro Junior College by the accord will provide the necessary prerequisites for students to successfully complete the full programme; and will also be responsible for the recruitment of students, a maximum of 30 per course.

“The MoU represents the university’s commitment in developing the country’s human resource capacity that will be empowered with skills to contribute to the development of the tourism sector as well as the economic, social, cultural and political transformation of Belize,” said the president of the national tertiary institute Dr. Fraser. “UB is ensuring that future leaders have access to educational programs that are relevant to national development needs and priorities of Belize.”

To date over 100 students who have earned UB’s Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management are employed in all areas of Belize tourism sector, including the Radisson Fort George Hotel, Belize Tourism Board (BTB), Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), the Hospitality sector, Tour Operation, Park Management and Policy Development.
