2012 UB EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS
The University of Belize through the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) will hosts its annual Earth Day celebrations under the theme “A New Wave of Green Energy” to promote awareness of alternative green energy sources starting at 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 pm. on April 19, at Central Campus, Belmopan.
It is aimed to instill knowledge about a greener livelihood for a cleaner environment and sustainable use of our natural resources.
This is UB’s sixth Earth Day celebration aimed at promoting conservation, green technologies, as well as sustainable and responsible practices. UB has already taken the lead in the use of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power through a hybrid system at its Calabash Caye Marine Field Station in the Turneffe Islands Atoll.
The University is also in the process of setting up a large scale solar panel grid system on its main campus in Belmopan that will provide clean energy for the University.
Activities planned as part of this year’s Earth Day celebrations, includes four major attractive competitions: Trash and Fashion, Creative Arts, Poem Competition, and Non-Governmental Organization recognition. These competitions have three levels each and are open for primary, secondary and tertiary levels, except for NGO competition. There will also be several educational and informative booths, games, food and many other surprises on that day.
Guest Speaker at the Opening Ceremonies is the Manager of Maya Mountain Research, Mr. Christopher Nesbitt.
To commemorate the event a tree will be planted.
