Joint European Union and UB Press Conference by Office of Public Information
02.02.2010
The University of Belize (UB) will from February 3 – 5 be the host organization for officials of the European Commission and representatives of 15 Erasmus Mundus member universities from Europe and from Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries from February 3 – 5. One highlight of the series of meetings and events over the three days is a press conference on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Radisson’s Cahal Pech Room in Belize City from 10 – 11 a.m. The press conference is being held to provide an update on EU-funded projects in Belize as well as an update on the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Lot 10 program.
Representing the European Union, in addition to its officer and staff in Belize, will be two European Commission officials, Mr. Denis Salord and Mrs. Renata Russell. Mr. Salord is a French citizen who has a degree in Law and History from Sorbonne and who is a graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is a senior EU official who is currently responsible for cooperation with the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries in the unit dealing with large Intra-ACP projects within the Europe AidCoopertion Office. His unit implements almost 12% (twelve) of all the European Development Fund, covering programs in the areas such as climate change, education, health, and migration. Mrs. Russell is a Polish citizen and an EU Commission official who is responsible for ACP cooperation with higher and basic education projects in particular. Her present portfolio includes programs such as EDULINK, the Erasmus Mundus ACP component and others. She holds a degree in linguistics and education from Hungary and a Master’s in European Studies from Belgium.
The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Program is financed by the European Union through its International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation. The EU divides its scholarship program in groups, and Belize joined the ACP group in 2008 at the meeting held in the Netherlands. The University of Belize secured 9 (nine) scholarships for its faculty, staff and students through signing on as a partner institution with the Erasmus Mundus Cooperative Scholarship program. Six of those scholarships were for Master’s degrees at universities in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Sweden for up to two years. Three of the scholarships were for one month staff exchanges. One of the UB lecturers who took up an Erasmus Mundus scholarship in Berlin in the 2008 allotment has now returned, and she will also be present at the press conference. ------------------------------------------
