UB Signs onto Solar Project for Clean Energy Promotion by Office fo Public Information

The University of Belize (UB) has agreed to construction of a system of photovoltaic panels on the northeast section of its main campus in Belmopan. Representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Government of Belize and the University of Belize culminated initial discussions for this clean energy solar project with Technical Notes signed on July 1st. Signing on behalf of the University was its President, Dr. Santos Mahung; on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, the Financial Secretary Mr. Joseph Waight; on behalf of the Ministry of Works, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cadet Henderson; and on behalf of JICA was Mr. Toshiaki Kobayashi, the Team Leader of the Consultants of the Preparatory Survey Team of Nippon Koei Company, Ltd. This Japanese-funded project for twenty million Belize dollars (BZ$20M) will position the University of Belize as a regional leader in clean energy production. The schedule set forth in the Technical Notes is for completion of the installation of the photovoltaic panels by March 2012, with training in use of the system to follow shortly thereafter.
