15.06.2010

The Prime Minister of Belize, Honorable Dean Barrow, will be the guest speaker at the national university’s eleventh commencement exercises this weekend in Belmopan. Although the University of Belize concludes its tenth year of operations, the June graduation season marks the eleventh commencement exercise; this is because earlier this year, UB held, for the first time in January, a ceremony for 295 (two hundred and ninety-five) graduates who completed their course of studies in July and December of 2009. This weekend, two ceremonies are being held: On Saturday, June 19, Bachelor’s and Associate’s degrees, Diplomas and Certificates will be issued to 348 (three hundred and forty-eight) students at UB’s main campus in Belmopan, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Then, on Sunday, June 20, fifty-three (53) students will be graduating from UB’s Toledo campus at 2:00 p.m., and the guest speaker for the UB-Toledo graduation will be Jeremy Enriquez, the Director of Social Policy and Planning in the Ministry of Human Development and Social Transformation. On June 23, UB’s Early Childhood Education Stimulation Center will hold its fifth “Moving On” ceremony for seventeen (17) pre-schoolers  who now will be entering Infant One in the primary school system. Late last month, on May 31, the University’s Regional Language Center issued English-As-A-Second Language certificates to 40 students from eight different countries. Thus, the total number of UB graduates receiving Certificates, Diplomas, Associate and Bachelor degrees for the 2009-2010 academic year is seven hundred and thirty six (736).

The theme for the June 2010 commencement exercises at UB is “Celebrating our 10th Anniversary: UB in Retrospect and Prospect.” Graduates represent forty-three (43) programs delivered through the four faculties of Education and Arts, Management and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Nursing, Allied Health and Social Work. A highlight of the June 19 and 20th ceremonies will be the presentation of the national university’s new undergraduate graduation gown.
