Faculty & Staff

Currently, there are five full-time UB IMS staff members: a Director, Station Manager, Boat Captain/Supervisor, Assistant Boat Captain/Maintenance and Maintenance personnel. Additions to the staff include two cooks and a floating person that is hired on a temporary basis, when the station is very busy. Also this year a Research/Education Coordinator and a Peace Corp Volunteer are scheduled to join the staff.

Elevated walkways and nature trails will be established through the mangroves and cocal forest, providing access for research and making these habitats easily available for educational purposes; whilst minimizing the impact on the environment. Facilities will be available for a range of marine science courses, as well as for training in basic technical skills such as boat handling and navigation. Environmental impacts at the facility will be minimized through mandatory orientation programs for visitors including training in environmentally safe snorkeling practices and restricting access to potentially sensitive habitats. Impacts from essential services will be minimized through the adoption of appropriate technologies. It is hoped that electricity will eventually be provided through wind and solar generators. A composting toilet is already in use. Most water is collected into large cisterns and a grey water processor has been installed which processes kitchen and shower effluent. Combustible waste is incinerated and non-combustible products are returned to the mainland for appropriate disposal.
