In 1998, the Government of Belize announced its policy of establishing the national University of Belize with its central campus in Belmopan. An Interim Board of Trustees was subsequently appointed as the governing authority of UB. The Interim Board of Trustees accepted the Government of Belize policy and has directed that UB administration, faculty and staff headed by the President to implement the policy.
The overall goal of the Task Force is to produce a comprehensive, integrated and practical plan to guide the move of five faculties, viz., Arts & Science, Business, Education, Engineering & Technology and Nursing & Health Sciences & Social Work to the central campus in Belmopan when the facilities at the Central Campus are completed. The physical move is now targeted for June, 2003.
The Task Force will aim for minimal disruption at the Belize City campus. A careful analysis will be made as to those programs that can continue to operate in Belize City on a self-sustainable basis and would not deny access to higher education to students from the Belize district and nearby environs. New programs will be directed to Belmopan.
The move is to be effected in an orderly, systematic, efficient, and cost effective manner, taking into consideration the human and social dimension of the undertaking. Formal notice of the move has been given to all UB faculty and staff as a condition of UB employment but it should be reiterated that the full time faculty and staff are urged to participate in the planning of the move so that within available resources, the institution can address those hardships associated with the move. Objectives :
1. To plan the move of human resources to Belmopan in a manner sensitive to the challenges that are bound to be associated with the move to full time faculty and staff and their families.
2. To plan for the move of students to Belmopan in a manner sensitive to the challenges that are bound to be associated with the move in terms of transportation, housing and related needs.
3. To move the full time and part time programs currently being offered at the Belize City campus to the Belmopan campus with minimal disruption in terms of the quality of content and delivery.
1. The Task Force is made up of the following members appointed by the President
2. The Task Force recommendations are submitted to the President who seeks the advise of Central Administration prior to decision making. Matters beyond the scope of the President?s authority are referred to the Board of Trustees.
The Task Force comes to an end when it submits its final draft plan to the President.
4. To secure economies of scale from the coming together in one campus of most of the programs and services offered by the University to its students and the general public.
5. To assist full time permanent and tenure track faculty and staff with the physical move to Belmopan.
6. To assist students, both full time and part time with the physical move to Belmopan.
7. To plan the move to Belmopan in a manner consistent with the plan of Belmopan City.
8. In the short run, to plan for holistic development of the Belmopan campus integrating the arrival of the faculties and their constituent members.
9. To plan for a dynamic Belize City campus that will continue to serve those students in Belize City and environs who cannot access the Belmopan campus.
10. To establish a planning mechanism that systematically address most if not all of the issues associated with the move to Belmopan and the restructuring of the Belize City campus. To obtain the necessary fiscal, time and other resources to come up with
