AENG English Belmopan The Bachelor Degree in English is an advanced program which prepares students, through a multi-disciplinary foundation in liberal arts and the humanities, to become effective and innovative professionals. Students are challenged to improve their control of the English language, particularly in the areas of writing and speaking, and will be prepared for further study in literature, law, and other fields where good communication skills are highly valued. The program provides courses and personnel whose expertise includes literary studies, linguistics, and cultural history through an emphasis on critical approaches to literature, academic research, and professional communication. These courses address an awareness of the diverse expressions of human experience in Belize, the Caribbean, Latin America and the multicultural United States, as well as contemporary issues of Post-coloniality, through close reading of a variety of texts which articulate the rich tapestry of human experience, the free exchange of ideas in a supportive and demanding environment, and the development of professional skills.
APRE Primary Education Belmopan, Belize, Punta Gorda The Associate Degree in Primary Education program prepares student-teachers with the content and methodology required to be effective at the primary school level. This program aims to foster an understanding of personal, interpersonal, intra-personal, academic, and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. This program culminates with an intensive one-semester internship experience, which allows student-teachers to apply concepts, and methods of their courses into the regular classroom environment. It is also intended to give the student-teachers the opportunity for practice, analysis, interpretation, decision making, and reflective teaching.  The Associate’s Degree in Primary Education aims to foster professionalism, and a commitment to the standards required by the National Primary Curriculum.
AECE Early Childhood Education
(Commencing August 2017)
Belize, Punta Gorda, The Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education is designed for pre-service and practicing teachers in Early Childhood classrooms. The program focuses on teaching children from birth to eight years. Coursework in literacy, child development, psychology, and educational activities will familiarize student teachers with how children grow physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively. Student teachers will learn effective techniques for working with young children and become proficient at forging strong partnerships with families. Field Experience takes place in an early childhood classroom setting where participants will spend the final semester doing supervised teaching.

BBIE Biology Education Belmopan

Science provides knowledge, skills and attitudes that help people understand how the natural world works. The Bachelor’s Degree in Biology Education guides students in discovering the wonders of life, physical, and ecological sciences and their application to the technology of the day. To empower students as teacher practitioners, a sequence of courses in pedagogical skills, classroom management, adolescent development, assessment and practicum follow. A full semester of student teaching experience completes the program.

Students graduate from this program with a deep understanding of current scientific issues and the ability to make these subjects accessible, exciting and relevant to students in the emerging Belizean society and wider global environment.

Graduates from this program are prepared to teach Biology at the high school level and are also provided a rich foundation for further specialization in advanced science and research.  Bachelor’s Degree in Biology Education graduates also qualify for a full teaching license.

BBUA

The Bachelor in Business Education Degree with cognate in Accounting is a program that prepares Secondary and Junior College level teachers with the Accounting and Finance courses necessary to deliver CXC/CAPE syllabi. These student-teachers are empowered with the pedagogical/andragogical knowledge and skills necessary to prepare students to meet the growing demand for future Accounting and Auditing personnel in our developing society. The program includes a broad core business courses that encompasses the body of knowledge that highlights the successful practice in business administration, an accounting core that provides the conceptual and analytical skills necessary to succeed in the accounting profession along with the theoretical and practical components to prepare them to be an effective teacher.

BBUC

The Bachelor in Education Degree with cognate in Information Technology is a program that empowers the In­formation Technology Teachers of Secondary and Junior Colleges with a sound foundation in IT together with the practical aspects of the discipline. Along with the pedagogical/andragogical development, these student-teachers will obtain the knowledge of deploying computer systems to enhance learning and achieve educational objectives through effective resource utilization. This program will expose students to fundamentals, principles and theoretical aspects of design, development and maintenance of computer systems while preparing them to adapt to technological changes through research and practice.

The Bachelor in Business Education Degree with cognate in Management equips Secondary and Junior College level teachers with Business and Human Resource Management skills, including development of organizational objectives, problem solving, decision making, planning, organizing and controlling to provide an effective work environment. These skills will prepare student-teachers to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive global market and deliver Economics, Office Management and Principles of Accounting Courses. These student-teachers will develop fundamental skills in the pedagogical/andragogical aspects while exposed to the CXC/CAPE syllabus and best practices in business and educational circles to enhance their teaching and learning skills.

BENE English Education Belmopan The Bachelor’s Degree in English Education is an advanced program which prepares student-teachers with the con­tent and methodology to be effective and innovative professionals at the primary, secondary, or supervisory level of educational institutions. Students are provided with professional courses in education, concept courses that address an awareness of the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in Belize, the Caribbean and the global society, factors influencing language acquisition, the complexity of the English language problems found in Belizean class­rooms, literary meaning in historical, social, cultural, national, regional, and international contexts, and methodology courses using instructional techniques in the teaching of English as a second language, and targeting language skills such as grammar, usage, and mechanics. This program culminates with a one-semester internship experience which effectively allows the student to apply theories learned to daily practice in the teaching of English. Furthermore the Bachelor’s Degree in English Education program develops within the student the capacity to critically assess the importance of effectively communicating in English, orally and in writing. The students should also recognize the significance of the role of English as the language of instruction throughout the education system of Belize.
BHIS History Belmopan The history program at the University of Belize is to develop generations of Belizean historians to foster Belizean nationalism and identity through teaching, research, writing and publications of world, regional and Belizean history. Students will develop knowledge/understanding, skills and values in history, its methods of enquiry, interpretation and writing. The program’s research and publications agenda will focus on Belizean history from 2,000 B.C. to the recent past. The program seeks to promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation of history through journals, books, monographs, conferences, symposia and other public presentations so that Belizeans can better understand the challenges and opportunities we face as a nation within the context of our region and the world.
BMAE Math Education Belmopan The bachelor program of mathematics education at the University of Belize provides student-teachers with an appreciation for the history and development of various fields in mathematics. Students will also be equipped with the ability to approach problems, whether industrial, technological, social, or economic in nature, from an analytical perspective, using a myriad of tools and techniques to arrive at an optimum solution. This program further provides student-teachers with the pedagogical skills in mathematics to be effective and innovative professionals at the secondary, or supervisory level of secondary educational institutions. This program also assists student-teachers to become effective facilitators of mathematical knowledge while providing them with the abilities to tabulate, synthesize, and analyze mathematical concepts at the CXC, CAPE, and GCE “A” levels.
BPRE Primary Education Belmopan, Belize, Punta Gorda The Bachelor Degree in Primary Education is an advanced program which prepares student-teachers with the content and methodology to be efficient and innovative teachers at the primary school level.  Student-teachers are prepared to assume leadership roles and to conduct research to inform best practices.  In addition, it promotes an understanding of personal, interpersonal, intra-personal, academic, and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. This program aims to foster an understanding of personal, interpersonal, intra-personal, academic, and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. The Bachelor Degree in Primary Education culminates with an intensive one-semester internship experience, which allows student-teachers to apply concepts, and methods of their courses into the regular classroom environment.  The Bachelor Degree in Primary Education aims to foster professionalism and a commitment to the standards required by the National Primary Curriculum.
BSED Spanish Education Belmopan The Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish Education is program which prepares students with the concepts, skills, and attitudes to be a functional, effective, efficient, and innovative Spanish teacher at primary or high school levels. Student are provided with professional courses in Education, Hispanic History and Culture, Hispanic Literature, and Hispanic Language and a solid Linguistic support as well as additional courses in educational psychology, research, and leadership, addressing the major subjects of the Belize National Curriculum for Spanish. This program promotes an understanding of personal, interpersonal, academic, and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. This program culminates with an intensive one-semester internship experience which allows student-teachers to apply theories, concepts, and methods of their courses into the regular classroom environment. Placing theory into practice, the experience provides for the student-teacher to foster the development of professional teaching styles. It is also intended to give the student-teacher the opportunity for practice analysis, interpretation, decision making skills through reflective teaching, and developing skills in planning, instruction, assessment, communication, and classroom management. The Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish Education fosters in students a sense of responsibility, professionalism, commitment to high standards of teaching performance, and leadership qualities.

CESL English as Second Language Belmopan The Certificate in English as a Second Language (CESL) is designed for Belizean and international students who want to live and study in an English speaking country/environment, and for those who want to improve their personal, academic and professional skills in English. The CESL program is divided in two semesters; each semester is further divided into two 8-week quarters. All students that successfully complete intermediate conversation during the second or third quarters are required to complete the ESL Internship. The objective of the ESL Internship is to expose the students to diverse settings where they will be practicing English. This program focuses on improving students’ communications skills (conversation, reading and writing), while learning about the uniqueness of the Belizean culture and society.
CPRE Certificate in Primary Education Belmopan, Belize, PG The Certificate in Primary Education Program is designed for in-service teachers who have completed an Asso­ciate Degree or Bachelor Degree and need the requisite content and pedagogical competence to teach at the Primary Level. This program aims to foster an understanding of personal, interpersonal, intra-personal, academic, and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. This program culminates with an intensive one-semester internship expe­rience, which allows student-teachers to apply concepts, and methods of their courses into the regular classroom environment. It is also intended to provide the student-teachers with the opportunity to practice, analyze, interpret, make decision, and engage in reflective teaching. The Certificate in Education aims to foster professionalism, and a commitment to the standards required by the National Primary Curriculum.
