Vision 2022

This is a moment of change at the University of Belize. A time to leap to another level. This Institution, as the National University, must fulfill its promise and with this the hopes and aspirations of thousands of young Belizeans, now and in the future, for a better quality of life through a University education and an experience that is fulfilling as it is memorable.

Successful Universities today are like many businesslike, winning enterprises – reaching out and responding, connecting with their stakeholders, being relevant as well as being responsible to their societies. Our “4 Rs” as I have dubbed it.

As we present this SMART Plan, in the near future, I hope you will discern the major elements of this leap – moving our taught programmes from Associate Degrees to Bachelors and Masters; creating new ones in the areas of the Sciences, Engineering, Health, Agriculture, Education, the Creative Arts, as in Business and Entrepreneurship. We will be interrogating Belizean research questions through the initiation of Masters and Doctoral Degrees for exceptional students. Putting research and publication as a cornerstone of this University, thereby fostering a more scholarly and impacting University is a priority. We will tell Belize and the world what we do so that they will invest in our future. Maximising the potential of technological usage to reach out to Belize while creating efficiency is an important thrust. Our ecosystem at UB , including our infrastructure, will be “student and faculty/staff centred” as it is inspiring.

We will be creative, innovative and entrepreneurial, seeking out partnerships, all necessary for this to succeed. But all of Belize, students/parents/guardians, the Government, the Business Sector, the NGOs and the International community must come to our support – the National University must be seen as a priority in this nation’s advancement, as without firstly the high level human talent, Belize cannot maximize it’s capability. Hence, new financial injection into this university is the number one priority for us to succeed.

Visioning and planning are critical to shaping a new future, and these first steps have now been accomplished by this UB Team. Thanks to all. But staying focused and execution have bedeviled us in the Caribbean, hindering our advancement. The UB over the next five years and beyond, will demonstrate to all, the capacity to be bold, not afraid to take measured risks, and to live this plan which energises us to execute and win.

I close with the wise Mayan words “If you change nothing, nothing will change”. I am adopting this as your President and once again, “Let Us Build UB Together”.

Salto Transformacional para la Universidad de Belize
Visión 2022

Este es un momento de cambio en la Universidad de Belize. Es tiempo de proyectarnos a otro nivel. Esta institución, como Universidad Nacional, debe cumplir su cometido, y con él también responder a las esperanzas y aspiraciones de millares de jóvenes beliceños, ahora y en el futuro, para una mejor calidad de vida a través de una educación universitaria y una experiencia que sea tanto satisfactoria como memorable.

Hoy en día, las universidades exitosas son como muchas empresas, empresas ganadoras, relacionándose y respondiendo, conectando con todos los sectores involucrados, siendo relevantes, así como responsables para la sociedad a la que se deben. Nuestras “4 R” como lo he denominado.

A medida que presentemos nuestro Plan SMART (por sus siglas en inglés) en el futuro cercano, seguramente podrán discernir en él los elementos principales de esta proyección: impulsar nuestra oferta académica desde grados asociados a licenciaturas y maestrías; creando programas nuevos en las áreas de Ciencias, Ingeniería, Salud, Agricultura, Educación, Artes Creativas, así como en Negocios y Emprendimiento. Estaremos impulsando la investigación científica de alto nivel en Belize a través de la iniciación de maestrías y doctorados para estudiantes excepcionales. Instalar la investigación y la divulgación científica como una piedra angular de esta universidad, para fomentar así una universidad más académica e impactante es una prioridad. Daremos a conocer en Belize y el mundo lo que hacemos para que deseen invertir en nuestro futuro. Maximizar el potencial de la tecnología para llegar a todo Belize al tiempo que desarrollamos eficiencia es una inversión sustancial. Nuestro ecosistema en UB, incluyendo nuestra infraestructura, estará “centrada en el bienestar de estudiantes, profesores y personal” como fuente de inspiración.

Seremos creativos, innovadores y emprendedores, creando alianzas y gestionando todo lo indispensable para nuestro éxito. Para ello, Belize en pleno: estudiantes, padres, tutores, gobierno, sector empresarial, Organizaciones no gubernamentales y la comunidad internacional deben acudir a nuestro apoyo. La Universidad Nacional debe ser vista como una prioridad para el progreso de esta nación, ya que, sin antes proveer un alto nivel de talento humano, Belize no puede maximizar su potencial. Por lo tanto, una nueva inyección financiera en esta universidad es la prioridad número uno para que tengamos éxito.

La visión y la planificación son fundamentales para dar forma a un nuevo futuro, y estos primeros pasos ya se han llevado a cabo por este equipo de la Universidad de Belize. Gracias a todos. Pero habernos mantenido enfocados en un punto y obsesionados en llevarlo a término, nos ha encerrado en el Caribe, obstaculizando nuestro avance. La Universidad de Belize, durante los próximos cinco años y más allá, mostrará su capacidad de ser audaz, sin temor a tomar riesgos equilibrados, y de dar vida a este plan que nos llena de energía para su implementación, que nos conducirá al éxito.

Concluyo con estas sabias palabras mayas “Si no cambias nada, nada cambiará”. Estoy adoptando este aforismo en mi papel como Rector y reitero, “Construyamos juntos la Universidad de Belize”.
